This is due primarily to significant and specific loads on the body of the rider and compounded by the notorious lack of rider warm-up and preparation for the effort. The specific work of the muscles during ridden training can cause spasms and muscular pain which if left untreated might lead to more serious injury.

The therapeutic salt baths

The advantage of a home spa is that it can be used for relaxation when you most need it and have the time to go for it. The benefits of such home care are enormous – not only you can gain a firmer body and smoother skin but can also help yourself with muscle tension and stressed mind.

Some of the most effective treatments are salt baths, scrubs and herbal baths . For home treatment we will need :

– Soft brush for massaging the body
– Bath sponge or glove
– Sea salt

At the beginning it is worth doing dry massage that improves circulation and skin tone . Massage your body with circular motions starting from your feet and ending at the neck and head. Before entering the bath it is best to scrub with a damp wash cloth, glove or hand using coarse salt. Always massage your body towards your heart.

Now onto a bath with coloured and scented salts that give the skin softness, disinfect feet, help fight headaches and muscle aches as well as improving your well-being.

  • prepare a bottle of your favourite, pure, spring water or mineral water
  • turn on relaxing music
  • light at least one candle, can be scented
  • prepare hot, steaming bath
  • add a glass of sea salt or rock salt and a few drops of essential oil like lavender, rosemary or peppermint (or in case of headache – marjoram and lemon)
  • dive into your home “sea” for 15 minutes or so, try to relax without thinking about anything specific, listen to music and look at the flame of a candle
  • while bathing drink small sips mineral water (try to drink at least 2 glasses of water)

Now, some of my favourite home made bath salts recipes:

The basic bath salt 1

1 cup of sea salt
1/2 teaspoon of liquid glycerine
1/2 cup of a bath salt of your choice

Mix all the ingredients thoroughly (first both salts then add the liquid) and put it all in an airtight jar. Run your bath and add 1-3 tablespoons of the mixture. Liquid glycerine softens and moisturises the skin.

The basic bath salt 2

2 cups of salt , optional sea or rock salt
1 tablespoon of baking soda
10 drops of an essential oil of your choice
natural food dye matching your essential oil for example yellow for vanilla or mixture of yellow and red for orange etc

Mix all ingredients thoroughly with a wooden spoon and put in a jar with a lid. You will need 2-3 handfuls of your salts per bath.For best effect, pour the salts under running bath water so it mixes and dissolves well.

The special salt bath

The ingredients of this mixture are readily available and once combined work great on the whole body – relieve joint and muscle pain, smooth your skin, soothe, and help you relax after a difficult day. It also removes toxins from the body and is a natural deodorant.

1 cup of cosmetic grade borax
2 cups of Epsom salt ( Epsom salt , magnesium sulfate )
1/2 cup of coarse sea salt
1/4 cup of baking soda
1/4 cup white cosmetic clay
1/2 cup dried lavender
10 drops of lavender essential oil

In a large bowl, mix and preferably whisk all dry ingredients, then add the oil still stirring continuously. Cover the bowl with a linen cloth and leave to stand overnight. In the morning mix it all well again and transfer to an airtight jar.
For bathing use 1/4-1/2 cup of mixture over hot water.

Energizing Salts that revives , removes fatigue and boosts energy

2 cups of bitter salt (Epsom Salt)
1 cup of sea salt
10 drops of green food dye
5 drops of blue food dye
6 drops of eucalyptus oil
10 drops of rosemary oil
15 drops of peppermint oil

Mix the salt first then add the liquid ingredients. Stir thoroughly, dry and put into a jar.

Bath sea salts contain pure magnesium which is why swimming in water that contains it allows for absorption through the skin. magnesium is an essential part of almost all processes occurring in the cells of our body.

Bathing in water with sea salt relaxes and warms us, improves blood circulation and speeds up the removal of toxic substances from the body which is why it is so effective in the removal of joint and muscle pain.

  1. Comfrey and Arnica are also great for healing briuses, sprains and strains. Just don’t ever use Comfrey on broken skin and open wounds. 🙂 Love this post.

      • You can grow your own, buy it from Chemists and get it from herbalists. I get it from the chemist as they have a great range of comfrey products that have nothing else added. I have used it with great success on my knee after I suffered a subluxation of my patella – I do it all the time and healing times vary from 2-4 weeks, but I normally have a little bit of pain for a week or so after the swelling and heat have subsided. The swelling was greatly reduced and I was back on my feet with full use of my knee and no residual pain in 2 weeks. I have used it on a friends horse who damaged his left hind suspensory. It’s still early days but the vet is surprised and really happy with the way he is healing up. Here is a little info on it….
